Position:
Research Associate (Emergency Medicine)
Description:
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a full-time Research Associate position. The successful candidate will manage a prospective research project on adverse drug events (ADEs) and patient safety, and will participate in other individual research projects on ADEs. He/she will hold a University degree in Pharmacy (PharmD or residency training preferred) with at least two years experience conducting clinical assessments as a pharmacist in a hospital setting (in Emergency Department or inpatient units preferred). Familiarity with medical terminology and experience in quantitative and clinical research are an asset. Computer experience required (MS Word, Excel, email, file encryption). The successful applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills; excellent effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, organization, and time management skills; ability to work flexible hours including occasional evenings and weekends as required; ability to work both independently and as part of a team; and have attention to detail.
The incumbent's duties include coordinating, promoting, and collecting data prospectively for a large prospective research study that will validate the use of a clinical decision rule for ADEs in the ED. The incumbent will assist in all aspects of managing and coordinating this multi-centre study. The incumbent's primary responsibility will be to assess patients in the clinical care environment for ADEs, and to collect data. The incumbent will assist and perform the following activities: Protocol development; Ethics submission; Development of data collection procedures; Development of electronic data capture; Piloting of data collection procedures; Collection of data from the clinical care environment; Development of study databases; Coordination of study sites; Data management; Data cleaning and quality control; Knowledge Translation activities; and other activities as required.
The successful candidate will report to the Principal Investigator of the program; will supervise other research assistants involved in the research program; will report laterally to the Emergency Medicine Research Office Manager, the Adverse Drug Event Screening Coordinator and will coordinate work with other research assistants involved in other emergency medicine research projects. The candidate will be based out of Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), and will work cooperatively with VGH, Lions' Gate Hospital, and St. Paul's Hospital emergency medicine staff and promote research projects with Emergency Department (ED) of those hospitals.
This position is expected to begin August 1st, 2012. This is a one-year term appointment (subject to possibility of extension). The salary is $85,000-$95,000 per annum commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Research Associate (James Hogg Research Center)
Description:
Applications are invited for a full time Research Associate position in the James Hogg Research Centre for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research, University of British Columbia. This position involves full-time research on the mechanisms of cell differentiation, focusing on lung fibroblasts and airway epithelial cells.
REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have a MD and/or PhD degree and at least 5 years of postdoctoral research experience in cell and molecular biology, as it pertains to the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases. A familiarity with the investigative techniques required for human and animal model-based respiratory research is essential. The candidate must have an experience with isolation and characterization of cells from human lung tissue as well as immortalized cell cultures and experience in siRNA and microRNA mediated regulation of gene expression is essential. In addition, experience in relevant laboratory techniques including flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, immunoprecipitation and western blotting, real-time PCR, cloning and transfection are required. The applicant will be expected to lead a research program.
DURATION AND SALARY:
The position will begin June 1, 2012 and is available for up to a 1-year term with the possibility of renewal. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Description:
Post-doctoral position is available for a new and talented Ph.D. trained in patch-clamp recording techniques and brain slice preparations. Exposure to imaging techniques will be a bonus. Our studies involve examining the roles of GABA and mGlu receptors in synaptic modulation and plasticity in the mammalian central nervous system. Only those with past experience in the patch-clamp recording technique need apply.

Position:
Research Associate
Description:
The Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a one-year position of the Research Associate in the area of Pharmacology and Neurosciences. This position will involve the study of elucidating mechanisms involved in synaptic plasticity, using patch-clamp recordings from neurons and imaging & molecular techniques, in slice preparations from different regions of the rat brain. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. or previous training in neuroscience and intracellular electrophysiological recordings from brain slice preparations. Applicants should be skilled in manual in vitro electrophysiology techniques and assay development including whole-cell patch clamp and action potential recordings. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out experiments and data analysis in a relatively independent manner. They are also expected to present results at various meetings, supervise research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students, play an active role in developing research proposals, writing manuscripts for publication, and other related documents. The successful candidate should also have experience in laboratory management and provide leadership to students and research assistants on all activities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a necessity as well as the ability to work in a team-environment.
